History

Tinsley Tree Project (TTP) was formed by residents of Tinsley in 1999. From the outset, our aim was to address concerns about the levels of air and noise pollution within the local area, working in close partnership with Tinsley Forum and helping to implement a Community Action Plan for the area. The project, through the support of the Single Regeneration Budget, set out with a view to providing training for the long-term unemployed and, over a period of 3 years, succeeded in providing training to, and increasing the employability of 12 people, planting in the region of 50,000 trees during this period.

Past achievements of Tinsley Tree Project

From 2002 to 2006, the project, working with Tinsley Forum and local residents, successfully secured support from the Objective 1 Programme Directorate to undertake environmental action within the local area, working as part of a Community Action Plan. Activities included:

  • the creation of an organic allotment and subsequent cultivation of organic produce

  • kerbside collection of green waste and subsequent recycling to produce compost for use in tree planting schemes

  • tree and shrub planting

  • community consultation

  • maintenance of identified local site

  • provision of local employment, training and opportunities for volunteering.

Since March 2006, the project has sought to operate sustainably as a not-for-profit social enterprise and undertakes contract tree planting schemes, commercial and public landscaping, and grounds maintenance as its primary activities. Any surplus funds help to support work within the Tinsley area.
